Go Abroad with AFS- An Adventure of a Lifetime

As a U.S. high school student or a recent graduate, when you study abroad with AFS you become part of a very special worldwide community. Each year, AFS-USA makes it possible for more than 1,700 American students to live and study in more than 40 countries, as part of an AFS worldwide exchange of more than 11,000 students internationally.

With more than 55 years of experience in developing a broad range of year, semester, and summer programs, and with more than 120 different programs, AFS can help you identify the right kind of program for you.

Going abroad with AFS begins with seeing a country through other people’s eyes, but not as a tourist. By living with a carefully selected host family in a local community and studying at a local high school, you’ll get an insider’s point of view. Sharing daily family life and enjoying times with new friends will make all the difference when you are learning a new language and seeking to understand a new culture and customs.

AFS offers two basic programs for secondary school students:

The School Program - is for one academic year, semester or trimester and begins in July/ August/ September or January/ February/ March depending on the country. AFS students live with a host family and attend a local secondary school as full-time students.

AFS offers these exchanges in more than 50 countries across the globe.

Summer or Intensive Programs - are for one to three months. These programs focus on home stays, language skills, community service or cultural activities. Participants mostly live with host families, participate in educational activities and enjoy their new communities.
